Body Engagement

If you are consistently singing repertoire, no matter the genre, you are considered a vocal athlete. While the vocal folds are housed in the larynx, the functionality of the whole body impacts the efficacy and flexibility of the how the vocal folds. Therefore, we leverage the use of some equipment we find in pilates, yoga, and workout regimens to engage lower parts of our bodies to find more freedom in singing.

  • This Pilates ball is great for singers to interact with core stability as well as pelvic floor release. I, myself, will sing while bouncing on this ball in my own lessons and the release is noticeable - particularly for singers that carry tension in the abdominal and pelvic areas.

  • It is also undeniable fun to use while singing

  • Another tool for core stability that can be utilized in the studio is a balance board. Without stability and proper engagement of our core, being the abdominal muscles, lower back muscles, glutes, hamstrings, and pelvic floor, we have nothing to serve as the foundation for our singing.

  • This tool helps develop a more full-bodied sound while singing

  • Resistance bands is a great way to engage certain muscles as a way to release others. My voice teacher has had me use resistance bands in a number of ways and they have surprising effects on the voice. They can be used in a way that aids in the development of vocal anchoring.

  • These come in a variety of levels of resistance and are long enough to step on

  • Yoga blocks are comfortbale ways to get your body into positions to build and manage air pressure a bit more easily.

  • I often have students learn how to engage their body by way of laying on the ground. I usually ask them to find a book they have to prop their head up. Yoga blocks act as a comfortable alternative that you can carry with you whether at home or on tour.

  • A portable yoga mat is a great addition for any singer that is singing in-person with a teacher at a studio rental. It allows for the singer to lay on the ground comfortably without worry of the floor beneath.

  • I often explore breathing by having students lay down or bridge pose. A portable yoga mat is a wonderful addition for singers that would benefit from work that involves laying down on the ground.
