SOVT Tools

In every one of my lessons, I integrate the use of semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises. SOVT’s are tools that create an impedance at the aperture so that there is a resistance to the release of airflow. This impedance causes the vocal folds to rapidly cut off the airflow with each vibration, which allows singers to get more sound output with less vocal effort. The three types of SOVT’s are when the occlusion is consistent (bubble phonation, singing on a [v] or an [m]), occlusion is oscillatory (lip trills, raspberries, rolled R’s, and when the occlusion is transitory ([j] glides, the use of [w]s and plosive consonants such as [b], [g], and [d]. Here are some SOVT tools to practice with where the occlusion is consistent.

  • The Portex Acapella was designed to aid in the removal of secretions for people that Cystic Fibrosis. However, it functions as an SOVT tool for singers

  • You have the ability to adjust the amount of resistance to your liking. It has a massage-like effect on the voice and allows for a tactile awareness of knowing how much air pressure is needed for the given vocal task

  • Bubble phonation, like many consistent SOVTs, is an evidence based approach for to effectively reduce the inflammation of the vocal folds.

  • This set of straws features two different diameters - 6mm and 12 mm. While research currently finds that a smaller diameter straw is has a known benefit, I find that a 12 mm feels more comfortable and has amore a massage-like effect on the vocal folds.

  • The OOVO straw necklace is a beautiful gift for any singer in your life. I was gifted this exact straw from an SLP colleague and continue to use it to this day. .

  • You can use it anywhere you are and the sound produced is faint enough that you will not bother those around it. It also offers a smaller diameter than the other straws featured. Due to its small diameter, there is no need for water. I highly recommend this as a thoughtful and practical gift. It is made of sterling silver.
